From the artist:
"The Staghorn Sumac has always been an interesting tree to me particularly
when I learned that they are not noxious like the close relative the Poison
Sumac. Quite the contrary, the Native Americans used the branches as spiles
to extract sap from the sugar maples and the fruit was used to make lemon-flavored
tea. In the autumn the leaves turn a beautiful red with orange and purple
highlights. The fruit perched on the end of the branches is a cluster
of fuzzy seeds. The clusters endure the winter and the dark red hue gives
the winter landscape a splash of color. This is the season I wanted to
depict and I felt the colors of the chickadee would compliment the snow,
sumac, and the gray of the background."
