"The snowshoe hare, more than any other animal, makes me think of winter
because of its fascinating adaptations that prepare it for winter’s
onslaught. It has over sized feet the allow it to stay on top of the snow,
making winter travel much easier just like humans that wear snowshoes.
Another name for this amazing animal is varying hare, which leads me to
another wonderful characteristic. Its coat changes from brown to white
with the onset of winter. This makes it very hard to see in a snowy landscape.
So for those people that live in the north keep your eyes peeled for this
winter ghost because you never know when one may hop out from the long
shadows of winter and show itself."
