“The white-breasted nuthatch is a beautiful and wonderful bird. They are common visitors to bird feeders in winter, and if you observe them closely you will see how they got there name. They will grab a sun flower seed, fly off to a tree, jamb the seed into a bark crevasse and proceed to hatch the nut from the shell with its beak. Despite the name, they eat more insects than nuts particularly in the summer. Another very distinctive habit of this unique bird is that they are just as comfortable hopping head first down a tree trunk as up. By the way if you can identify trees by their bark you will understand where the “on Silver” part of the title comes from. It’s a silver maple.”
